Ian Young
Global Energy – Chief Investment Officer

Ian has over 18 years international proprietary trading experience gained in Australia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and has traded energy related commodities on a physical and financial basis.

Ian started his career at Westpac Banking Corp as a graduate trainee in financial markets – a position for which only three candidates were chosen from that national graduating year. Following this year of rotation and a period trading AUD interest rates swaps, Ian accepted an offer to enter the power market as a trader in 1999. Since then, Ian has held senior positions within the energy market including as a Vice President with Lehman Brothers (UK) where he managed the UK gas book, the oil and gas options portfolio, and as an Executive Manager with FTSE 100 company Centrica where he led the UK Power desk and managed the UK power, coal and carbon emissions portfolios. Ian’s experience includes 5 years at Norwegian oil and gas producer Statoil where he obtained exposure to the physical drivers of the energy market while managing the UK gas forwards and options books, and as a cross-commodities trader for Essent Trading SA in Geneva.

Ian holds a BA(Hons) in Economics from the University of New South Wales. His thesis was entitled ‘Transitory Components of Stock Prices’, an original econometric study into the effect of shocks to the Australian equity markets.
